Test Drive Reviews
From A Woman's Perspective
by Rosie Cannone, East Anglian Daily Times, 17 April 2000
The old stigma attached to the Skoda marque should finally be banished for good as the new Fabia destroys the old, crucified Skoda image and completely relaunches the label.
The Felicia and Octavia transported Skoda to greater credibility but the Fabia look set to take it to even further heights. I had the pleasure of test driving the Skoda Fabia Comfort 1.4 8V MPi, supplied by T A Porter & Sons, Copford, Colchester. And what a fabulous experience.
A stunning example that times are changing, the Fabia demonstrates an attractive exterior with a newly designed concept in headlights; new high performance front headlamps with clear glass optics and rear lights fitted with diamond optics as standard hand in hand, this provides optimal visibility. Just by glancing at the vehicle, it offers a solid build, superior refinement and elegance. A quick glimpse and it could easily be mistaken for the VW Polo or Golf. As standard on the 1.4 MPi exterior are body coloured electric front door mirror, front fog lamps, tinted glass and body coloured bumpers, which all adds to the excessive sophistication yet spirited image. And, with an extensive range of paint finishes available and a comprehensive accessory programme, the Fabia can be designed as a unique individual.
Every detail externally and internally expresses and oozes quality, reliability and comfort ensuring a pleasurable drive. The Fabia provides great head and leg room, so if you're a petite person or of a larger stature, even the shortest of rides will prove satisfying. The seating position authenticates comfort for all shapes and sizes as the drivers seat is height adjustable and the steering wheel can be easily adjusted vertically and telescopically via the reach and rake movement. The dash is functional, solid and shish moulded, it features clear instruments and controls that fall easily to the hand, so, your concentration remains where it should.
There is an on board computer as standard which displays the time, outside temperature, distance travelled and travel time, accessed via a multifunctional switch which also operates the washers/wiper controls. Another neat aspect on the Fabia is the fold down tray situated by the driver column and door and the innovative coolable drinks compartment which are as standard on all models with air conditioning. Another great aspect is the internal central locking button, at the flick of a strategically placed switch, security is strengthened.
Added extras that are standard on the Fabia Comfort 1.4 MPi are one touch electric front windows with autostop, drive and passenger airbags, central locking with deadlocks, power steering and a third break light. The Fabia offers smooth, transitional gear movement and handles nimbly. It is fun to drive and extremely agile, offering low engine noise and low emission levels - considerably lower than those permitted by law.
Owning a Fabia is hassle free as Skoda guarantees a 3 year/unlimited mileage warranty, inclusive 3 years/45,000 mile servicing and 3 years free AA cover, evidence that Skoda is reliable and represents quality.
Is it any wonder that the fabulous Skoda Fabia was nominated and won 'What Car?' Car of the Year 2000 and best Supermini?
